Just a few days after my world fell apart after I was diagnosed with cancer, the doctor called me back into his office. ‘I have some more news for you,’ he said. My heart sank. I couldn’t take any more bad news. Trying to come to terms with having cancer at the age of 35 was bad enough. But the doctor’s news was shocking - and completely unexpected. ‘You’re pregnant,’ he said. I could only gasp at him. My husband Garnett, 33, and I had been trying for a couple of years to start a family and nothing had happened. I had started to think that perhaps I would never be a mum at all. But now I was being told I was actually pregnant, after all these months of trying. But it was just a few days after I’d been told I had cancer. ( bell )

I touched the lump on the side of my neck. It was hard and painful, the size of a walnut and when I touched it it made the side of my face go numb. I was worried about it. I’d had it for four years and already the hospital had operated to remove it once, but had removed the wrong gland, so it was still there. My fiance Barry, now 27, was worried too. It was only a month before our wedding, but I knew I had to have it looked at again. The GP referred me to hospital and once again I went under the surgeon’s knife. And when I woke up, this time there was no mistake. ‘I’m sorry but its a very rare cancer of the ear,’ said the surgeon. I was filled with horror. It had allowed to grow inside my ear for three years without any treatment. I’d been to the doctors more times than I could remember - but each time they had said it was just a swollen gland. And I’d heard that Viagra could help a woman concieve, so James and I had both decided to take one, to give us a double chance of finally concieving the baby we had longed for. ‘Fatty - go home and lose some weight’, the jeers and taunts were ringing around my ears as I walked along the street. I’d been insulted for years, but it never got any easier. I was 34 stone, with a 66 inch waist. I was just enormous. I’d have a good day at work as a debt collector. I got on well with my work colleagues, and for those few precious hours I was allowed to feel normal. But as soon as I stepped out of the door, strangers would hurl insults to me until I got into my front door. And then still people wouldn’t leave me alone. I’d hear the jaunts from outside, from gangs of teenagers, and they would hurl stones at my front door. (King , diet , weight loss )
