When the nest was knocked down, the adult seagulls had gone, but their day old baby chick was found cowering in the bottom. The team didn’t have the heart to kill it, and instead brought the chick to Katrina, who is the youngest poultry farmer in the UK.

WHEN Girlie the thoroughbred horse ripped open her leg with barbed wire her devastated owner Julie Gorton thought she'd lost her. The 13-year-old mare had lost so much blood that veterinary experts told Julie she wouldn't last through the night. The bottom of her right leg had been torn away, exposing the bone and severing a main arterty.

When keen rider Julia Dean bought her new horse Solo, she thought she'd got a good deal. The promising grey mare was a good jumper and Julia, 29, spent the first six months riding her in competitions all over Cheshire UK. But nine months after the mare arrived at her stables near Macclesfield, Cheshire, Julia got a lot more than she'd bargained for.

WHEN Woolley the rabbit suffered from an infection in his back legs, his owners were reluctant to have him put down. Owner Carla Foulger was determined to put the hop back into Woolley’s stride. WHEN Owen the baby hippo was washed into the sea after the devastating tsunami, his chances of survival were limited. He had become separated from his mother and the remaining hippos within his pod, and at just 12 months old was unable to swim to safety. So when rangers from the Kenyan Wildlife Service rescued him from his plight and took him to the safety of a wildlife reserve, tiny Owen decided to take matters into his own hands. Siamese twins Eman and Sanchia prepared to go through the pioneering 16 hour operation to separate them as they lay joined at the spine in December 2001, doctors warned their parents that they might never walk. But the operation was a success and now Sanchia and Eman have defied doctors to take their first steps a fortnight ago, in time to celebrate their second birthday.
