Siamese twins Eman and Sanchia prepared to go through the pioneering 16 hour operation to separate them as they lay joined at the spine in December 2001, doctors warned their parents that they might never walk. But the operation was a success and now Sanchia and Eman have defied doctors to take their first steps a fortnight ago, in time to celebrate their second birthday.

WHEN Archie Chapman qualified for his black belt in karate his instructors were amazed. For Archie is only eight years old and is the youngest person to have a black belt in the Shorai Association of karate in the UK. He is already training to be an instructor and when he qualifies in two years time, will be teaching pupils who are years older than him.

WHEN Marian Cooper browsed in a secondhand book shop she could never imagine what she was about to find. Out of hundreds of books to choose from, Mrs Cooper, 57, picked up the nearest book - a copy of Robinson Crusoe. When she opened the front cover, she discovered the signature of her brother Barry Hopkins, who had signed the page forty years previously at the age of ten. ‘To have discovered a childhood book in a second hand book stores, hundreds of miles away from where we lived as children, is just such an amazing coincidence.

WHEN William Hardy lost both his legs and his left arm after a terrible battle with meningitis his parents were devastated. They had been told that William, then 23 months old, was unlikely to survive the deadly disease. He battled through an 18 day coma, but the infection then claimed both of his legs and part of his left arm. Doctors had to amputate all three limbs to stop them poisoning his tiny body. Now brave William has been fitted with two artificial legs and last summer experts fitted him with a new left arm.
