Tiny Eliza Deakin is making medical history. Eliza is battling eye cancer and is the first baby girl in the UK to have a new type of treatment to save her life. Eye cancer is currently treated by traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy methods - but Eliza’s only chance of saving her sight is the new pioneering treatment which involves injecting the chemotherapy directly into her eye. She has recently started the treatment and doctors are hopeful that it will be a success.

I will never forget that awful phone call. ‘Katrina’s had a heart attack,’ said her former partner Danny. I couldn’t take it in. Katrina was only 34 and fit and healthy. How could she have possibly had a heart attack. She was much too young. But it certainly looked that way. She had collapsed at the bottom of the stairs, right infront of her ten year old son Lewis.

THIS is brave Harvey Phillips running for the first time on his new prosthetic legs. And as he took his first steps he beamed at his emotional mother Lisa Chappell and proudly told her ‘mummy, this is the best day of my life.’ Little Harvey, now nine, was struck down with the killer bug meningitis when he was just nine months old. He managed to win the battle for survival, but he lost both of his legs and part of his right arm and fingers off his left hand too. Since then he has never been able to walk more than a couple of steps at a time on his NHS prosthetic legs as it was so painful for him.

THIS is the little boy who lives with just HALF a brain. When brave Jake Gladstone was born, scans showed that only half of his brain was working. Doctors told his devastated mother Sarah that it was unlikely ever be able to walk or talk. But Jake has amazingly defied all the doctors predictions - and lives a normal life just like other children his age. Mrs Gladstone, 35, a police officer, who lives in Hull, said: ‘It is just unbelievable. When we look at Jake’s x-rays we can see the big space where half of his brain has died off.

THIS is the amazing quarter of a million to one baby. Julia Wright and her husband Mark were devastated when they told that he had a rare condition which meant his sperm were an abnormal shape. The couple had been trying for a family but after investigations doctors told the devastated couple that it was almost impossible for her to become pregnant either naturally, or by using IVF.

THESE are brave amputee soldiers Duncan Slater and Guy Disney trying out their new running blades. The carbon fibre blades were fitted earlier this week so that the determined pair can both run the London Marathon. It is the first time the pair have been able to run since they both had their limbs blown off in Afghanistan. Sgt Slater, who lives in Diss, Norfolk, was told that he would never walk again. But both men have proved their determination and took part in the Walking with the Wounded South Pole race with Prince Harry in December last year.

Pauline Ward has finally fulfilled her dream of being a mother - after 15 YEARS of trying to conceive. And when she finally fell pregnant, her miracle baby Andrew faced a mammoth battle for survival after being born weighing just 2Ibs - the same as a bag of sugar.

‘Have you poured boiling water over your son,’ the woman asked me accusingly. I almost couldn’t answer her, I was in so much shock that she could even think such a thing. I would never dream of harming my son Jayden, he was my world. But people didn’t understand why he looked so different - I was always being accused of leaving him out in the sun to burn, but this was the first time that anyone had ever actually asked me if I’d poured boiling water over him.

Standing at my local soft-play centre, I beamed with pride as my 9 month old son George, pulled himself up via another Mum's leg. He was so sociable, giggling at the slightest thing, especially the silly faces me and my husband Richard, 27, pulled.

But they are bravely using their own disabilities to try and help save lives from the brain bug - and try and stop other children losing limbs like they did.
