WHEN doctors gave up hope on Melissa Huggins, her sister was determined not to. Her only hope of survival from an inoperable brain tumour that had spread to her spine was pioneering treatment in America costing £250,000. Her family launched a fundraising drive and her sister Katrina selflessly cancelled her own wedding day to put the funds instead towards the treatment. And amazingly her devotion has paid off. Melissa underwent the pioneering treatment and recent scans have shown that the tumours have significantly shrunk. Melissa, 28, from Middlesex, said: ‘Its the best news that I could ever have imagined.

WHEN Sidney Razzell was born weighing less than a pound doctors thought he couldn’t possibly survive. At just 15 ounces, he is one of the smallest babies ever born in the UK. He was so tiny he didn’t even fit onto the hospital birth chart, and he was fed only a single drop of milk every few hours. His head was the size of a satsuma, his skin was translucent and he could fit in the palm of his mother’s hand.

THIS is the tragic couple - who are facing a desperate race against time to get wed. 18 year old Amy Hughes and 17 year old Nick Jaminet BOTH have an incredible rare premature ageing disorder. It means that even though they are both only in their teens, their bodies are ageing so fast that they are not expected to survive into adulthood. The couple, who met in May 2006, fell in love at first sight and in June this year they got engaged. But tragically if they lose their battle for survival, they may not make it up the aisle in time. Amy’s mum Jayne, 43, said: ‘Amy and Nick met at a conference in Boston, USA, and Nick took one look at Amy and they fell instantly in love. ‘They were insperable for the five days of the conference, and its lovely to see them together. They only have eyes for each other, and they just shut out the rest of the world.’

I can still remember the day we first met, Christine - it will be etched on my mind forever. I was playing in a band at a local club and you were there with a group of friends, listening to our music. We started talking that night and hit it off straight away. You were just my type. From then on we were inseparable. I was more than ten years older than me, but it never mattered. When we got married three years later, in July 1994, it was one of the happiest days of my life. You were 36 and I was 48 - and we thought we had our whole lives ahead of us. Our daughter Lauren had been born six months earlier, and you were so happy when you cradled her in your arms.

It was a hot night in August and I was standing on a flat balcony at a friend’s party when I suddenly started to feel hot on my back. I was standing infront of a window ledge where only hours earlier I’d helped my friend arrange some little tealights . It really was hot - perhaps I had been standing too near to the candle flame. I turned my head and looked over my back and couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. A flicker of flame had caught the bottom of my new floaty top I’d just bought for the party. It had set alight. I ran inside the open balcony door in panic, and the suddenly movement gave a blast of oxygen to the flames. Suddenly they whooshed all the way up my back. Before I knew it I had been pushed to the floor. People were rolling me around on the carpet trying to put out the flames. ‘Get this top off me,’ I kept screaming. Someone pulled it off, over my head.
