It was a hot night in August and I was standing on a flat balcony at a friend’s party when I suddenly started to feel hot on my back. I was standing infront of a window ledge where only hours earlier I’d helped my friend arrange some little tealights . It really was hot - perhaps I had been standing too near to the candle flame. I turned my head and looked over my back and couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. A flicker of flame had caught the bottom of my new floaty top I’d just bought for the party. It had set alight. I ran inside the open balcony door in panic, and the suddenly movement gave a blast of oxygen to the flames. Suddenly they whooshed all the way up my back. Before I knew it I had been pushed to the floor. People were rolling me around on the carpet trying to put out the flames. ‘Get this top off me,’ I kept screaming. Someone pulled it off, over my head.

WHEN Mary Kirkby discovered she was fatter than a SNOWMAN in her garden, she knew she had to take action. Standing next to the snowman, Mary’s 18 stone bulk was even bigger than the snowy creation with its round stomach. It spurred her into action and she has determinedly shed the pounds, to lose a staggering eight stone. ‘I knew I had to take action,’ said Mary, 58, who lives in Macclesfield, Cheshire. ‘When I saw that picture and saw that I was bigger than the snowman, I felt so embarrassed. I had no idea I looked that big.’

WHEN Gemma Perry was told her unborn twins were killing each other in the womb, she daren’t hope they would both survive. Doctors only gave them a 30 per cent chance of them both surviving the lethal condition - and offered to terminate the life of one twin to save the other. But Miss Perry refused to sacrifice the life of one baby - and decided that even though the odds of survival was so small, she had to give them both a chance to live. And thanks to a pioneering operation which managed to separate them in the womb, the twins have both defied the odds to survive and celebrate their first Christmas together.

WHEN his tiny daughter Amelia was given just week to live without an lifesaving transplant, her devoted father Edward made a brave decision. She was suffering from a rare liver condition but had such a rare blood type that it was unlikely that surgeons would find a donor liver in time. So he decided to step forward and risk his life to donate part of his own liver to save his desperately ill daughter. Surgeons removed a quarter of Mr Green’s liver and transplanted into his one year old daughter - who has since made a complete recovery. Mr Green said: ‘I never hesitated to step in and save Amelia. She was so poorly that it was heartbreaking seeing her lying there, fighting for life. ‘It was scary, but the thought that I would be burying my daughter in a few months time without a transplant overrode every fear I had. ‘To see her doing so well now is amazing.’

WHEN Leanne Goodwin went into labour with her triplet babies, there was one small problem. The hospital were short-staffed in their maternity department and the midwives needed an extra pair of hands to help with the tricky delivery. Luckily Mrs Goodwin’s mother in law Linda had accompanied her to hospital - who also happened to be a midwife. So she was asked to roll up her sleeves, put on a surgical gown and join the team in the operating theatre to deliver her own grandchildren. She helped bring Harvey, Alfie and Elsie safely into the world, much to the relief of her daughter in law.
