WHEN Gemma Spendley gave birth to her premature son she knew from experience that he would pull through. Tiny Damon was born at just 29 weeks weighing 2Ib6, but premature babies have run in her family now for three generations. Miss Spendley herself had been born prematurely at 28 weeks, weighing just 2Ib 5, to her mother Kerry Tallis. And her grandmother Treana had also given birth to Miss Spendley’s aunt Keeley at 30 weeks, who weighed just over 3Ibs. Miss Spendley, 24, who lives in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, said: ‘Most mothers would really worry if their baby had been born so prematurely like Damon was. ‘But I knew that I had been alright and so had my aunt when we were both born as early.

WHEN Sarah O’Boyle used to walk down the street, strangers used to stop her and ask her when her baby was due. Her stomach was the size of a nine month baby bump and had been steadily growing for more than ten years. Eventually Mrs O’Boyle went to see her GP complaiining of what she thought was Irritable Bowel Syndrome - and made a startling discovery. An ultrasound scan showed that she actually had a large cyst in her stomach - the size of THREE newborn babies - which had been growing inside her for nearly 15 years.

WHEN Faye Wells bought her size 14 wedding dress, she knew she had to take drastic measures to fit into it. She was a size 24, and weighed 15 stone, and knew that she would have to shed at least four stone to fit into her dream dress. So she opted for drastic gastric surgery and had a gastric band fitted, and by the time of her wedding day ten months later, she was a slim size 14. Mrs Wells, 33, said: ‘Not many brides can say they had a gastric band fitted in order to get into their wedding dress. ‘It was drastic, but I had tried every diet under the sun, and had never managed to lose more than a few pounds. ‘When I fitted into my size 14 dress on the day, I was thrilled to bits. I felt like a million dollars, and it was the best thing I could have done.’

WHEN Jacob Simpson fell 20 feet onto marble stairs as a toddler, doctors told his devastated mother that he may not survive. Jacob, then 13 months old, suffered a brain haemorrhage and a blood clot on his brain in the fall. Doctors battled to save him with an operation to remove the clot, but told his mother Anne-Marie that even if he did survive, he would have brain damage.

AFTER a staggering 23 years of trying for a baby, Tracey Hibbert thought she would never be a mum. Mrs Hibbert and her husband Stephen had tried IVF treatment, fertility drugs and had suffered an ectopic pregnancy -  and she had even been on a diet to lose more than ten stone in their desperate quest. The couple’s agony had continued when Mrs Hibbert did fall pregnant and had given birth to twins in December 2006 who had tragically died at four hours old after they were born too early. When Mrs Hibbert eventually fell pregnant after 23 years of heartbreak, doctors decided to STITCH her baby into her womb to try and stop her being delivered early too.

THIS is the brave little girl who has beaten FOUR brain tumours - after doctors told her parents she just had months to live. When doctors discovered the fourth tumour growing in Abi Thornton’s brain, they said they couldn’t operate and warned her parents to expect the worse. But brave Abi has fought on - and against all the doctors expectations - the tumours have now shrunk and she is living a normal life. Her mother Jacqui Thornton said: ‘We really can’t believe that Abi is still with us after the doctors told us we only had months left with her. ‘I couldn’t bear the thought of losing her, and had planned to make her last months as happy as possible, but she has refused to give up. ‘Now doctors have said the tumours are shrinking and she is back living a normal life. It really is a miracle.’

A BOY who was decapitated after a racing car crash has made a remarkable return to the racing track after the accident which doctors said should have killed him. Chris Stewart, now 14, suffered an injury so severe that it is termed the ‘hangman’s injury’ - where his head was effectively severed from his neck - in the crash two years ago. Doctors gave him just a seven per cent chance of survival before carrying out a risky operation to reattach his skull to his spinal cord using titanium plates and screws. Only six people worldwide are known to ever survived such an injury, and Chris has now made medical history by becoming the only person in the world to have ever properly recovered from it. And he is now back between the wheel of a racing go-kart, despite doctors not knowing whether he would ever walk again after the accident. His mother Debbie Stewart, 43, a financial advisor, said: ‘I was so nervous when he got behind the wheel for the first time since his accident.

WHEN Mandy Atherton was given a life saving bone marrow transplant by her sister she had no idea just how precious a gift it would turn out to be. Because Mrs Atherton has just battled the potentially deadly swine flu virus thanks to the transplant from her sister. If she hadn’t had the lifesaving transplant, her own immune system - which had been virtually destroyed through leukaemia - doctors say her body wouldn’t have been able to cope with the killer virus. Mother of two Mrs Atherton, 47, who has two children, Thomas, 13, and Sophie, 14, said: ‘There is no doubt that Tracy has saved my life twice over.

MOST people reach for a glass of water when they are thirsty - but just a few sips of water could kill little Alfie Allen. His vocal cords cords have been paralysed in an extremely rare reaction to chemotherapy drugs used to treat his leukaemia. It means that his windpipe doesn’t close properly when eating and drinking, and any fluid he takes in just goes straight into his lungs, which then flood. Alfie literally can’t have a simple drink of water - and instead his mother Sophie Burden has to pump water into his stomach via a tube.

I had never really noticed the mole on my shoulder, as far as I could remember it had always been there. But when my daughter Abby was about four months older, mum said to me she thought it had gone darker. ‘Go to see the doctor about it,’ she kept nagging me. But I just kept pushing it to the back of my mind. I had a lot to think about bringing my daughter up. I’d given birth to her at 19 and my partner Andrew Simpson, 25, and I had been thrilled when she was born in September 2003.
