WHEN Gemma Perry was told her unborn twins were killing each other in the womb, she daren’t hope they would both survive. Doctors only gave them a 30 per cent chance of them both surviving the lethal condition - and offered to terminate the life of one twin to save the other. But Miss Perry refused to sacrifice the life of one baby - and decided that even though the odds of survival was so small, she had to give them both a chance to live. And thanks to a pioneering operation which managed to separate them in the womb, the twins have both defied the odds to survive and celebrate their first Christmas together.

WHEN his tiny daughter Amelia was given just week to live without an lifesaving transplant, her devoted father Edward made a brave decision. She was suffering from a rare liver condition but had such a rare blood type that it was unlikely that surgeons would find a donor liver in time. So he decided to step forward and risk his life to donate part of his own liver to save his desperately ill daughter. Surgeons removed a quarter of Mr Green’s liver and transplanted into his one year old daughter - who has since made a complete recovery. Mr Green said: ‘I never hesitated to step in and save Amelia. She was so poorly that it was heartbreaking seeing her lying there, fighting for life. ‘It was scary, but the thought that I would be burying my daughter in a few months time without a transplant overrode every fear I had. ‘To see her doing so well now is amazing.’

So she was asked to roll up her sleeves, put on a surgical gown and join the team in the operating theatre to deliver her own grandchildren. She helped bring Harvey, Alfie and Elsie safely into the world, much to the relief of her daughter in law.

I can still remember the day I first clapped eyes on Rob Lovatt. I was just 16 and I thought he was the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen. The one problem was, he didn’t know I even existed. I went to get some sweets from the local shop which was next to the pub and I saw him through the window, standing with his mates. He was 18, and not only hadn’t he noticed me, but he also had a girfriend too. So I didn’t stand a chance. I carried on admiring Rob from afar and then in time, when I was 19, I got married to a local lad called David. But the marriage was ricky from the start. We had our two children Mandy, now 31, and James, 27, and eventually split up in 1984, six years later.
