‘I wish I could fly - just like Spiderman,’ my son Aiden would say to me, day after day. He just really wanted to be like his ultimate hero ‘Spidey’ as free as bird, leaping from building to building, saving everyone. But Aiden had been born with just half a heart and was extremely poorly. Being like Spiderman was just a dream to him.

WHEN Rosie Mychajlow made the startling discovery at the age of 17 that her father wasn’t her real father, it sparked an amazing battle to find him which lasted 35 years. Rosie eventually found him half way across the world in Canada - and she found him just in the nick of time. Her father Alfie had been given just a year to live after being diagnosed with cancer, but his daughter finding him has proved to have been the best medicine for Alfie - as two years after his first meeting with Rosie, he is still alive and fighting. Rosie, 54, who works as a vocational skills tutor, and lives in Derby with her partner Tony, 47, daughter Stephanie, 21, and son Toby, 18, said: ‘It was the most amazing moment when I met my dad for the same time. ‘A family member had told me that he had been given just a year to live, so I found him just in time. But he is still alive now a few years later, so I think it was the best tonic for him. It has given him a reason to keep living.’ Rosie spent the first 17 years of her life thinking that her stepfather John was her real father. It wasn’t until she applied for a job at the age of 17 and she needed a copy of her birth certificate for a reference that the truth came to light.

Annamarie’s coffee order was a regular as clockwork. Every morning at 8.15am she would come in for her daily cup of coffee. I loved my job at Starbucks, and enjoyed meeting all the customers. But that was it - that was all I knew about Annamarie. Other that that we were complete strangers. Then one morning she came in and she was so quiet and sad as she stood at the counter. I asked her what the matter was. She said she was fine, but she had a few health problems. I asked her what they were and she told me that she had fatal kidney disease and had just been put on the transplant list. She was going to have to dialysis treatment to clean her blood and do the job of her kidneys until a new kidney became available to her. I was so shocked I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know Annamarie at all, but she looked so distraught that my heart went out to her. ‘i’ll help you,’ I suddenly blurted out to her.

I was down at our local market with my baby son Micky lying in his pram, when suddenly I heard a woman standing next to me start to speak. ‘Things like that shouldn’t be allowed out,’ she said, taking a look at Micky in his pram. I was so angry I was speechless. What right did she have to judge my child like that.
