I was shopping with my baby son Ben in our local supermarket when I looked up and woman was stood infront of my shopping trolley just staring at Ben. She shook her head in disgust and just walked off. Tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn’t stay here any longer - I had to leave. It wasn’t Ben’s fault that he didn’t look like other children his age. He was born with lots of problems, including Kabuki Syndrome, which means his face is shaped differently to other children. His face is flat, with a flat chin and nose. But what people notice most about him is his eyes. Both of his eyes are cloudy, especially the right one, which gives him a strange look. He can see perfectly well out of them, but they look so different from normal eyes, and people treat him as if he is some sort of freak.

My husband Stephen and I were desperate for a baby, but it just wasn’t happening. I had come off the pill 12 months after we got married in June 1999, and we got on with trying to start a family. But then a year later, nothing had happened, so I went to our local hospital and the doctors gave me some tests. It showed that I wasn’t releasing eggs properly every month. So the doctors gave me some fertility drugs and I had eight cycles, but that didn’t work either.

But when she woke in agony one morning in April and was rushed to hospital, doctors made a startling discovery. At the time she fell pregnant with their son John, now 13, another egg had been released, and had stayed at the end of her left fallopian tube. Mrs Brown had an operation to remove the ‘twin’ cyst last week and has now made a full recovery.

I had a holiday booked to Thailand with my husband and I was dreading getting on the beach and baring my body. I was a massive 21 stone 4 and the previous year we had also been on holiday to Thailand and all the slim Thai women on the beaches there had put me to shame. Even on the flight over I couldn’t get the seatbelt to fasten, so I’d had to hold it together, just hoping the air stewardess woudn’t spot me. I just couldn’t go through the same hell a year later, so I decided to try and lose a few pounds before we set off. I’d always struggled with my weight, ever since I was a teenager. Even at the age of 13 I was over 15 stone and had to wear size 18 clothes. I didn’t really get teased at school because of it, so I was never embarassed about my weight then.

WHEN Samantha Brown’s daughter was born with a birthmark stretching over the right side of her face, she didn’t hesitate to help her. Now Ellie, ten, can hold her head up with pride and walk down the street without anyone staring and pointing at her. And she rewards her mum with the biggest smile of all. Mrs Brown, who lives with husband Paul, 36, a bank manager, and their other daughter Lauren, eight, said: ‘ We have spent a lot of money on having Ellie’s birthmark removed, but just seeing her smiling and laughing with her friends is priceless to us.

THIS is the little girl who had to have a bone marrow transplant - to stop her tongue sticking out. Brave Demi Leigh Rodden, three, was born with a rare condition that caused her tongue to swell and stick out of her mouth. People thought she was sticking out her tongue and being rude to them, but the condition had caused her to tongue to swell so much she couldn’t keep it in her closed mouth. Amazingly she has now had a transplant - from the umbilical cord cells of a stranger’s baby in the USA - and now she can live a normal life.

I was filled with dread. My family wanted to go on a cycling holiday, but how could I possibly manage. I’d managed to already shed some of my 27 stone bulk, but how was I ever going to get my leg over a bike saddle. I’d never been able to ride a bike. Even as a child I’d been overweight.
