I was filled with dread. My family wanted to go on a cycling holiday, but how could I possibly manage. I’d managed to already shed some of my 27 stone bulk, but how was I ever going to get my leg over a bike saddle. I’d never been able to ride a bike. Even as a child I’d been overweight.
SUMMERFIELD. I LOST 16 STONE ( 101 Kg) ( 224 pounds) TO RIDE A BIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME.

THIS is the baby whose survival has been hailed a miracle after she survived in her mother’s womb - thanks to TWO lifethreatening heart conditions. Tiny Charlotte Litchfield was born with the main arteries in her heart the wrong was round - a condition which was so severe it should have meant she didn’t survive her birth. The condition meant that blood wasn’t being pumped around her body properly and her lungs wouldn’t get any oxygen. But because she also had another lifethreatening condition - a large hole in her heart between her two ventricle chambers - it meant that some oxygenated blood was able to get to her lungs and keep her alive.

WHEN Ceri Kilty decided to take her five year old daughter for an eye check she had no need to be alarmed. She had decided to take daughter Ella on a whim and had no reason to think that there was anything wrong with her daughter’s sight. Her daughter’s school had stopped doing routine eye checks on their pupils, and she thought it woud be good to get Ella checked anyway. But it was a mother’s whim that paid off - after the optician discovered a large cancerous tumour on the back of Ella’s left eye. If it been left only another few months Mrs Kilty and her husband Scott would have faced losing their only daughter to cancer.

WHEN Jason Hallett lay in hospital having his leg amputated he was bowled over by the kindness of nurse Nicki Climmer. He was staying in hospital over Christmas that year and she not only changed his dressings and gave him medication, but she kept him company too. As the weeks went by, they fell in love and after Mr Hallett was released from hospital, they became a couple. Then four years later, in September 2006, Miss Climmer made the ultimate sacrifice for her patient - she gave him one of her own kidneys when he suffered renal failure.

THIS is the brave little boy who has beaten testicular cancer at the age of four. Doctors discovered a tennis ball sized lump in his right testicle in March and since then little Connor has undergone rounds of gruelling chemotherapy treatment to beat the disease. He is only one of a handful of boys under the age of ten who develop the disease each year as it is a cancer more commonly found in men aged 15 to 45. Luckily doctors caught Connor?s cancer early, and now his relieved parents have brought him home from hospital after finishing his treatment. His recovery is made all the more remarkable by his own mum Kimberly Anderson beating cancer twice herself - once when she was Connor?s age. Mum Kimberley, 25, said: ?I never imagined that someone as young as Connor could even get testicular cancer.

THESE are the miracle twins born after their mother took the sex drug Viagra in a desperate attempt to conceive. Yvonne Finlayson went to Los Angeles to beg doctors for help in becoming a mother after three attempts at IVF in the UK failed. Mrs Finalyson had a womb lining that was so thin that an embryo couldn’t implant properly. So doctors at the Sher Institute of Reproduction treated Mrs Finlayson with the sex drug Viagra and her miracle twins Lewis and Ava were born last April. Mrs Finalyson, 36, a management consultant, who lives with husband Mark Ruston, 35, a Royal Naval Officer, in Glasgow, said: ‘It really is amazing that using Viagra for a medical treatment has allowed me to give birth to my beautiful twins.

DONNA Barton and her sister Sonia could almost be twins as they have led an amazing parallel life. The two sisters have married two brothers - and even gave birth to their babies on the same day. Members of their family can’t believe the amazing string of coincidences that began when Donna, at the age of 14, struck up a friendship with Adrian Barton who lived down the road. Her sister Sonia, 42, said: ‘No-one can quite believe it when they know that Donna and I married two brothers - let alone when we gave birth to our daughters on the same day. ‘Our lives have been more identical than if we had been born identical twins.’

THIS is the amazing dog who has astounded experts with his survival after being born with two hearts. Golden retriever Alfie wasn’t expected to survive after being born with an extra heart chamber that was attached to his normal heart. His previous owners put an advert on the internet after his rare condition was diagnosed and he was taken in by veterinary nurse Emma Foxhall. She raised the £3000 needed for him to have pioneering lifesaving treatment at Liverpool University Small Animal Hospital - an operation which vets had never carried out before. They managed to replumb his extra heart chamber into his existing heart - and now it has saved his life.
