A FATHER whose life was saved by his workmates after they paid for a scan which revealed he had a lifethreatening brain tumour has been given the all clear by doctors. It was a huge relief for Gary Harris who had waited 15 months after his initial operation to find out whether his brain tumour had grown back. Mr Harris was saved in May last year after his colleagues stumped up £700 for the brain scan which revealed a deadly tumour, that would have killed him within a fortnight. He would have died waiting for the scan on the NHS, even though he had been in excruiating pain and and had suffered constant headaches due to the tumour. But now he has had a scan at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, and doctors have finally given him the all clear.

WHEN Phyllis Yates lost her voice more than 13 years ago she despaired of ever being able to say hello to her beloved granddaughters. Ever since Donna, 13, and Leanne, 11, were born, Mrs Yates has never been able to hold a conversation with them. She would play games with them as toddlers and give them cuddles, but has never been able to say ‘I love you’. Doctors were baffled about how she lost her voice. She went to bed on night in 1993, then woke up the next morning unable to speak. She has spent more than a decade undergoing numerous tests, but doctors have never been able to find any answers. In November last year, she was finally referred to a specialist at Gravesend Hospital in London for a private consultantant and he diagnosed laryngeal dystonia - where the muscles of the voice box go into spasm.

As my daughter Maria started to take her first steps down the aisle, I had tears in my eyes watching her. Dressed in a beautiful cream dress she made a beautiful bridesmaid - walking down the aisle infront of the bride. But Maria was no ordinary bridesmaid. It was a moment my husband Michael and I never thought we would ever see. Maria was born with meninigitis, which even though she bravely held on and managed to survive, it left her with cerebral palsy. For three years Maria had not been able to speak or walk. But when my brother’s fiance asked Maria to be a bridesmaid - I knew I had to help her walk down the aisle come what may. ( michael )

I was so big I hardly drag my 42 stone bulk off the sofa, but I needed to go to the doctors. So slowly I shuffled down the hallway to the front door, when my knees gave way and I fell to the floor. Are you alright mum, my son Simon said, rushing over to help. He grabbed my hands to help me up, but I couldnt move. I was stuck on the floor. I was too enormous to get up. My husband Vincent and two friends came to help too. But even between the four of them, they still couldnt shift me. I was stuck fast. ( beere )

I couldnt believe it as the doctors delivered their devastating verdict. Im afraid you have cardiomyopathy. Your heart is very weak and you are going to need a heart transplant to survive, said the doctor. The heart condition had been passed on through my family. Already five people in the family had died of it - but I was determined it wasnt going to get me. I was going to survive. My heart had been made weaker by the birth of my son Harry, now three. I hadnt known I had a problem until he was born and it fatally weakened my heart. But now I had him to think about. I couldnt leave him without a mum, so I knew I had to hang on. ( spriggs )

WHEN doctors told Rebekah Page that she needed an emergency operation to save her life after she suffered an ectopic pregnancy she put her trust in the doctors. They had told Mrs Page that the unborn baby was growing in her left fallopian tube, and she needed it removing immediately or else it could rupture and kill her. But in a botched operation, doctors removed the right fallopian tube instead and discharged her from the hospital. She spent the next three weeks bleeding, and at risk of a life threatening rupture, until she went back to the hospital in severe pain and they discovered their mistake. Mrs Page then had to undergo a second operation to remove the baby - now ten weeks old - which has destroyed her chance at motherhood as is meant she had lost both tubes. Harrogate District General Hospital have now paid out 9,000 in compensation to Mrs Page last month.

MY daughter Michaela was pushing her dollies pram across the kitchen when she suddenly said mum . I screamed out loud for my husband Tony, 31, a policeman. Listen to what she is saying, I urgd. Then it came again. Mum, mum, said Michaela. I just burst into tears - I couldnt believe that my little girl was actually calling me mum. It was like a dream come true. Michaela is my little silent angel - whom the doctors had told me would never walk or talk. She was diagnosed with Angelmans Syndrome and the doctors had told us she would be locked in her own little silent world, unable to communicate with us all. Whilst her twin sister Stevie is a bubbly happoy little five year old, it seemed that Michaela was always destined to be her silent shadow. But thanks to pioneering physiotherapy and brain training excersizes that we have been doing with her, Michaela has defied all the doctors to be able to walk - and now she has uttered the most wonderful word I will ever hear. I just stood rooted to the spot as my son Ryan screamed at me. Im getting bullied because of you - because you are so fat. The words stung me. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. That my son was getting bullied at school because of what I looked like. Surely it was enough that I had been bullied at school for my weight - that Id endured years of taunting and hateful words because of my weight. If that wasnt enough, my son was now getting it too, all those years later. It was just like I was being bullied again - but this time it was worse. Ryan shouldnt be having to go through all that. ( martin ) So no sooner as he had confessed to me about the name calling that hed been suffering, then I made a decision. I would lose the weight for Ryan.

NOT many people would be envious of a pigs life. Penned into dirty pigstys, just waiting to be turned into bacon is no-ones idea of fun. But Babe the pig has got it just right - for him its more of a charmed life. Babe lives on his own private island in the Bahamas and even the most dedicated beach bum would be envious of his hedonistic lifestyle.

AS more than forty dangerous reef sharks come swooping in for the hunks of bloody fish no one would want to be in their midst. With their ability to tear a human apart limb by limb, 60 feet down on the ocean floor with the hungry pack wouldnt seem a good idea. But 39-year-old Andrea Lee has given up her job in Oxford to join a unique shark feeding programme in the Bahamas. Each day, Miss Lee, puts on her diving gear and a protective chain mail suit and dives down, together with a metal box of fish chunks, to feed the hungry pack and capture them on camera.
