LITTLE  Annabel Woods is the amazing ‘frozen sperm baby’ who was conceived after her father’s sperm had been frozen for an amazing SEVENTEEN years in a test tube. When Andrew Woods, now 40, was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 23, doctors told him that aggressive chemotherapy would leave him infertile. So he and his wife Sally, 40, a hospice fundraiser, decided that their only chance of having a family in the future was to have his sperm frozen whilst he battled through cancer.

WHEN these quadruplets celebrated their first birthday, it was a day that their parents feared they would never see. After Luke, the smallest of the quads became gravely ill, his parents Tracey Fry and her fiance Martyn Giibbs didn’t think they would be bringing their four little miracle home. But tiny Luke hung on, and after a long six month battle, he was finally allowed home to join his two brothers and sisters. And the quads were reunited in time to celebrate their first birthday eight weeks ago.

My daughter Samantha was wheeled down to the operating theatre, and I was just praying that she would pull through the operation. It was an operation to mend a valve in her heart - but I had more reason than most mums for being terrified of my daughter being taken down for such an operation. I had already lost my husband Gary at the age of 48 - when he was on the operating table to mend a faulty valve - just like Samantha. I’d already lost him - so I was terrified that I was going to lose my daughter too. ( wooding )

TINY Alex McLaughlan is a medical miracle after his battle for survival began at just four weeks in the womb. His mother Maria had just been diagnosed with breast cancer, and had to undergo a mastectomy under a general anaesthetic. Doctors were unaware that she was pregnant when they carried out the operation, and then Maria underwent four months of gruelling chemotherapy treatment whilst her baby - unknown to everyone - was growing in the womb. It was only when Maria was five months pregnant that she felt her little fighter kicking, and told doctors that she suspected she was pregnant. Shocked, they carried out a scan and found that she was pregnant. They recommended a termination as they were convinced that the strong chemotherapy drugs would have damaged the baby. But she was determined to give her baby the best chance she could.

‘Can you get your son to take off his mask,’ demanded the woman standing infront of me. ‘He is scaring my son,.’ But Hunter wasn’t wearing any mask. He knows only too well the taunts that the Elephant Man had to suffer. He has been born with tumours that deform his neck and head - just like the 19th century man whose life was featured in the 1980 film ‘The Elephant Man’ At just five years old, Hunter has become a mini version of Joseph Merrick, who eventually died at the age of 25 due to suffocation. AS Megan Blunt was facing her long cancer battle her thought weren’t on her own life. Instead she was thinking about how she could help other children get through the long hours of gruelling chemotherapy treatment. As she lay in her hospital bed beside her friend Nathaniel Burke - who was also battling through the rare bone cancer - she began to plan to write a book to help others. Now Megan has completed the 40 page book, which is full of helpful tips for children fighting cancer, and it has been published in memory of Nathaniel who sadly lost his battle with the disease. The book, called ‘chemotherapy and cakes’ was published in March by children’s cancer charity Clic Sargent, and has already been published in seven different languages and has been distrubuted as far as Japan, USA and Australia.

It breaks my heart when Gineen my daughter forgets who I am. ‘It’s mum,’ I keep having to tell her, looking into her confused eyes. It was devastating when the doctors delivered their verdict. The twins were just three years old and I was being told they had such a rare condition that they probably wouldn’t live past being 30. As I looked at them, chattering away to me, it just broke my heart. I’d thought my little girls were normal, now I was being told that they wouldn’t see past their thirtieth birthday. It felt like my whole world had collapsed around me. ( nash )

My husband Phil had just recovered from a bout of meninigitis. He’d been so ill and had battled to survive in intensive care. I had been by his bedside, just praying that he would pull through. All the family had been given anitbiotics as a precaution, especially for protection for our two daughters, Aimee, nine, Sophie, seven. But now Aimee wasn’t feeling very well. ( smith )

WHEN Steve Bootle’s wife Michelle discovered she was expecting twins, it was a double surprise. But when she telephoned Steve’s brother David to tell them the good news they had just had a double shock too of their own - they were expecting twins too.

NO-ONE can quite believe us when we tell them that our twins have different birthdays. We celebrate Bethany’s first, then the following day we celebrate Joshua’s - as amazingly our twins were born either side of midnight. But we feel so lucky to have our twins at all - as Dave has battled through testicular cancer, and doctors told us we would never be able to have children. ( lapham )
