I stared at the blue lines on the pregnancy stick. It was positive - but would I ever really be a mum. Id been through enough heartache already. Iíd lost four babies through miscarriage, and Iíd had two strokes too. Would my body be able to cope with carrying a baby. But I knew I would do anything to be a mum at last - even it meant a risk to my own health. ( parker )

WHEN Jodie Crossís daughter Millie recovered from lifethreatening meninigitis they thought that their nightmare was over. Millie, then six months, was just an hour from suffering a massive heart attack when she was rushed to hospital, and she spent a week fighting for her life on a life support machine. But just hours later, their other daughter Lydia fell desperately ill with the killer brain bug too. Because both girls suffered from different types of the bug, it was seen as an eight million to one chance that both had it.

THIS amazing photograph shows the moment where Lici Hoover met 30 of the people who helped saved her life. As Lici lay fighting for life after an emergency caesarian to deliver her baby son, doctors managed to pump a staggering 84 pints of blood through her body. I lay on the scanning table and joked to the midwife. ĎJust tell me there is one in there please.í And I was serious.† I already had twin boys - and I was worried that I was going to be carrying twins again. But her answer was like a bombshell had been dropped. ĎI donít know how to tell you this,í she said. ĎYou arenít carrying twins - there are three babies in there.í ( burt )

It is heartbreakingly poignant - the two palms pressed together in a symbol of hope. And it was the only hope that Victoria Simmonds could hope for - as her tiny son Kaven pressed his tiny hand into hers. Kaven had been born at just 23 weeks - one of the most premature babies ever born in the UK. As he hung onto life he managed to battle through a flesh eating bug that was eating away at the inside of his tiny stomach, and he underwent a staggering six operations and FIFTY blood transfusions to survive.
THE HAND OF HOPE.

I feel proud though that Iíve been so strong. Losing so many babies would have destroyed so many mothers, but not me. Iíve never needed tranquilisers or sleeping pills, I was just determined to keep on trying to be a mum. And Iím so proud of Edward too, for making it this far. I just hope he will keep strong. He is a real survivor. I may have lost six children - but Iíve got my wonderful son. ( Bernardi )

As I pushed back my dinner plate I sat back in my chair and rubbed my back. It had been hurting all day and I had the sudden urge to get up and go to the toilet. My husband Iain and I were at a dinner party to celebrate a friends daughterís 18th and I was 33 weeks pregnant with twins. We had just had the starter and the main course, and were waiting for the dessert, when I had to get up and make my way to the toilet. As I stood up and climbed the stairs, my waters suddenly broke. I couldnít believe it. I just stood there, with water running down the inside of my linen trousers. I just didnít know what to do. We were in a hotel - an hour and a half away from the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where I was due to give birth to the twins. I made my way down to Iain and whispered in his ear. ĎIím in labour and Iím going to give birth to the twins now. ( macfayden )

I couldnít believe it when the consultant delivered his terrible news. ĎIím sorry but you have breast cancer,í he said. I just stared at him in shock. Surely it couldnít be happening again. I had lost my mum to breast cancer and my sister Sarah had fought it too. Then just a few years later my other sister Caroline had battled cancer to. Now it was my turn. But I knew I could beat it - and the reason was simple. We may have lost our mum to cancer, but my two sisters had fought through it and won. If they could do it, so could I. ( douglas)
