But suddenly there was an overwhelming urge to push. ‘They are coming,’ I screamed. And I felt the sensation of something slithering down my trouser leg. It was the first twin. I was just in shock. I couldn’t believe it. John bent down and pushed the baby back up my trousers and out of the top. The baby was blue, it didn’t look good. John phoned 999. ‘Help, my wifes having twins in our doorway. I need an ambulance,’ he shouted. Then came the second urge to push and Whoosh! Like lightening, John caught the second twin in his arms. (cork)

The doctors were adamant, my twin babies needed to be born. They gave me a date for the operation - ‘we will operate tomorrow,’ they said But I knew I couldn’t give birth on that day. My step daughter Andrea had rang the night before with labour pains. Her baby - our first grandchild - was due to be born any minute now. I couldn’t give birth on the same day to my twins. ( schian )

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. ‘I’m very sorry but your daughter has cancer,’ said the doctor. But it couldn’t be possible - we couldn’t as a family be that unlucky. My mum Zena had already fought a battle with cancer. And that isn’t all. I had lost my daughter Kirsty at the age of 11 to a rare form of stomach cancer. And I had fought a battle with breast cancer too. It seemed that cancer was taking over our entire family. ( oconnor )

I decided to change my life. A few weeks later, as I was on the road to recovery, I knew that I would have to confess what I was feeling to Sue. But how could I tell Sarah, then 17, and Amy, 22, that their daddy was a woman in a man’s body. No one would ever guess I’m not a biological female, but I know that I nearly paid a very high price for my new boobs. It nearly cost me my life. ( robson )

AS I lay in my hospital bed, I couldn’t believe what the doctor was telling me. ‘You’re a very lucky man,’ he said. ‘You died seven times in one day.’ I couldn’t remember anything that had happened that day, so I had to accept what the doctors told me. ( fleming )

AS Comet the golden retriever looks at his owner Nina Hallett and wags his tail, it seems like a miracle that he is still alive. In January 2004 Comet became desperately ill with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph tissue, and it seemed like there was no hope to save him. But amazingly Comet is now the worlds first surviving dog with lymphoma to have a lifesaving stem cell transplant using bone marrow cells from a donor dog. Now after a long steady recovery, he is finally cured, and a check up last month gave him the all clear. It is a case which has staggered experts worldwide - as lymphoma is always fatal in dogs, and they usually only live for a year around diagnosis. It is now three years since Comet was diagnosed, and he is now cancer free.
