AS Kayley Rogers gives her parents a smile, its a sight they never thought they would see. Brave Kayley has made a remarkable recovery after doctors discovered an unbelievable THIRTY tumours growing inside her stomach. At just four months old, her tiny stomach had swelled up like a balloon and mum Mitzi Rogers raced her daughter to hospital for tests. Scans showed the mass of tumours on her liver, and tiny Mitzi had to undergo major surgery to remove the mass. The brave little fighter managed to pull through, and after seven courses of chemotherapy treatment, she has finally been given the all clear.

AS Comet the golden retriever looks at his owner Nina Hallett and wags his tail, it seems like a miracle that he is still alive. In January 2004 Comet became desperately ill with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph tissue, and it seemed like there was no hope to save him. But amazingly Comet is now the worlds first surviving dog with lymphoma to have a lifesaving stem cell transplant using bone marrow cells from a donor dog. Now after a long steady recovery, he is finally cured, and a check up last month gave him the all clear. It is a case which has staggered experts worldwide - as lymphoma is always fatal in dogs, and they usually only live for a year around diagnosis. It is now three years since Comet was diagnosed, and he is now cancer free.

THIS is the amazing giraffe - who has to eat 15 indigestion tablets a day to help him survive. Beau the giraffe has a daily diet of 15 Tums - after he was diagnosed with the fatal condition Giraffe Wasting Syndrome. The tablets, combined with a special diet of 40 to 50 Ib’s daily of specially imported roots that Beau eats, has saved his life. And it makes him the zoo’s most expensive animal - as it costs more than £25,000 a year to feed him. A spokeswoman for Franklin Park Zoo, Boston, said: ‘Beau was so ill. He was literally wasting away. But now he has made a remarkable improvement, although we will have to watch his condition for the rest of his life.’ The person who came to Beau’s aid, when he first lay dangerously ill is eleven year old Autumn Faucher. At 16 feet high, Beau towers over his four foot friend, but it is a remarkable relationship as the giraffe allows her to stroke his neck and give him a cuddle.

THESE women are perhaps the worlds most unusual surrogate mums. Instead of helping childless couples, Barb Jones and Maureen Casale play mum to baby gorillas, who have been abandoned by their mothers. Is a most remarkable tale - of the special bonds that develop between the women and their gorilla babies.

THIS photograph looks like any other family happily smiling for a picture - but it hides a terrible legacy. When Isabel Smith’s 15 year old Sam developed a cough, she wasn’t initially worried as he was just recovering from a cold. But it persisted and she took him to her GP several times, and was sent home with cough mixture and an asthma inhaler to try and clear it up. But a few weeks later, doctors made a terrible discovery. The schoolboy was suffering from a lifethreatening heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy and desperately needed a lifesaving heart transplant. As it is a heriditary condition, they then tested other members of the family one by one - and made a shocking discovery. Mrs Smith, her two year old son Otto, her sister Harriet, 26, and her mother Lynn, 63, were also suffering from the condition.

PRETTY Kirsty Ashton looks the picture of health as she gives her mum Julie a hug. No-one would ever guess that brave Kirsty is struggling as she battles with more than a HUNDRED tumours which are invading her body. The weight of the tumours pressing on her spine means that Kirsty has to wear a body brace for upto 23 hours a day, and had to undergo a risky spine operation which had to be stopped half way through as the surgeons feared they were going to paralyse her.

I couldn’t believe what the doctor was saying. My ovary was gangrenous and black - it had to come out. But I was 23 weeks pregnant with twins - how could they possibly survive me having such an operation. But the terrible thing was that having the twins had caused my ovary to twist and die. It had been caused by the stress of pregnancy. I’d wanted my babies so much - now they were putting my life in danger. And I had to put their lives in danger in return - to save us all. ( hill )

WHEN Mark Tointon was born with a deformed foot it seemed unthinkable that he would ever be able to walk properly, let alone run. After seven operations to rebuild his right foot - and a total of nearly three years in plaster, doctors have eventually managed to rebuild the limb. But they have only managed to rebuild it up to a size seven - which doesn’t match his other size eleven foot. It might give him difficulties balancing, but Mr Tointon, 41, has not let it stand in the way. He has embarked on a marathon challenge which no-one in the world has ever attempted before. He is aiming to complete nine marathons - but they are no ordinary marathons. He is running across every continent in the world, and is doing the highest marathon, the lowest, the direst, the wettest and the hottest. He is also running across jungle, mountains, desert and ice.

As my daughter Georgia’s fingers effortlessly glide across the piano keys, I can’t believe what I’m seeing. My daughter was born with five fingers on each hand - and no thumbs - and surgeons have had to rebuild her hands. So to see her play so beautifully on the piano now is a sight my husband Peter, 47, and I never thought we’d see. Georga’s achievements are extra special to us as she was diagnosed with spina bifida when I was 20 weeks pregnant and doctors asked us if we wanted a termination. But Peter and I were adamant that we would cope with whateverr problems Georgia had. So to see her living a normal life and playing the piano is such an amazing sight. ( Hill , music )

We still don’t know who the donor is, who saved Elipida. But now Elpida’s body is filled with cells from that donor, so in a way, Elipda now has some little sister somewhere out there, who is six months older than her, who doesn’t know yet that she saved someone’s life. When we leave hospital we are going to send a thank-you card to the family, because it is thanks to them that Elpida now has a chance. I’m going to go on the bone marrow donor list myself too, just in case one day I can also help someone, like someone has helped my daughter. ( kokolakis )
