WHEN Joanne Shiel looks in the mirror, she canít stop crying. Skin cancer has ravaged her face and doctors have had to remove a tumour that was eating away under her right cheek and eye socket. Now she has been left with a face scarred by the operation - all because she got sunburnt on holiday many years ago. It seems impossible to believe that skin cancer has turned her face into a mass of scars - but she has released these horrifying pictures in a bid to prevent anyone else going through what she has. Joanne, 54, who has moved to Cyprus from Washington, Tyne and Wear, said: ĎGetting a tan isnít everything - your face is much more important. I would have never sat in the sun like I have done in the past if Iíd known what it was going to do to my face.
SKIN CANCER DID THIS TO MY FACE.

I stared at the blue lines on the pregnancy stick. It was positive - but would I ever really be a mum. Id been through enough heartache already. But I knew I would do anything to be a mum at last - even it meant a risk to my own health. ( parker )

WHEN Jodie Crossís daughter Millie recovered from lifethreatening meninigitis they thought that their nightmare was over. Millie, then six months, was just an hour from suffering a massive heart attack when she was rushed to hospital, and she spent a week fighting for her life on a life support machine. But just hours later, their other daughter Lydia fell desperately ill with the killer brain bug too. Because both girls suffered from different types of the bug, it was seen as an eight million to one chance that both had it.

I lay on the scanning table and joked to the midwife. ĎJust tell me there is one in there please.í And I was serious.† I already had twin boys - and I was worried that I was going to be carrying twins again. It is heartbreakingly poignant - the two palms pressed together in a symbol of hope. And it was the only hope that Victoria Simmonds could hope for - as her tiny son Kaven pressed his tiny hand into hers. Kaven had been born at just 23 weeks - one of the most premature babies ever born in the UK. As he hung onto life he managed to battle through a flesh eating bug that was eating away at the inside of his tiny stomach, and he underwent a staggering six operations and FIFTY blood transfusions to survive.
THE HAND OF HOPE.

I feel proud though that Iíve been so strong. Losing so many babies would have destroyed so many mothers, but not me. Iíve never needed tranquilisers or sleeping pills, I was just determined to keep on trying to be a mum. And Iím so proud of Edward too, for making it this far. I just hope he will keep strong. He is a real survivor. I may have lost six children - but Iíve got my wonderful son. ( Bernardi )
