AS little Ellie Challis hugs her Christmas teddy bear and pulls a cracker with her twin sister Sophie, her parents have hailed it a miracle. Just in time for Christmas, brave Ellie, who lost part of her arms and both her legs after she contracted meninigitis, has a new arm which means she can open her presents with her twin. Only two weeks ago, little Ellie touched the hearts of the nation as she took her first steps on her brand new prosethetic legs, from world renowned Dorset Orthopaedic. And now she has been fitted with a new prosthetic arm too, in time for Christmas.

I couldn’t believe it as I looked at the scan picture infront of me. There it was, as clear as day, mum looking out at me next to my baby. It was my 11 week scan and as the sonographer ran the scanner over my stomach, I just gasped in shock. Mum had lost her battle with a stroke just before I’d fallen pregnant. I’d been trying for a while to have a baby with my husband Duane, and mum had been with me, supporting me when I’d lost two babies previously. ‘You’ll fall pregnant soon love, I can feel it,’ she whispered to me as she lay in her hospital bed, just before she died. She never got to hear my good news, just a few weeks later, that I had fallen pregnant, just like she said. But now as I looked at the scan picture, I knew it was telling me something. Mum was watching over me and she knew that I was carrying another baby. ( nash )

THIS is the amazing little boy who has literally come back from the dead after doctors switched off his life support machine. Doctors said they didn’t hold out any hope for six year old Craig Boardman who was given a nil chance of survival after suffering massive injuries after being hit by a truck. Doctors had already switched off his life support machine once, but he had shown no sign of life so they had switched it back on. The second time it was switched off, no-one held out any hope - until Craig took the tinest of breaths. ( christmas )

She already had two daughters under the age of four and twin daughters too, aged 18 months. But when Mrs Delegado went for a scan - she was in for a triple shock. She was carrying not one baby - but three. When she gives birth in April next year - she will have given birth to two singletons, twins and triplets - and will have an amazing SEVEN children under the age of five.

THIS is the amazing little girl who only has half a heart. Tiny Olivia Ratcliffe has amazed doctors with her survival after she was born with her tiny heart beating the wrong way round. Doctors have now managed to rebuild her heart - but only so half of it functions -  but she is managing to live a normal life.

My brothers and sisters and I were all really close when we were growing up. We lived near the docks in Sunderland, and we’d always be racing out the house and down the docks to play near the fish being brought in and being sold on the dockside. But I never realised that one day four of them would one day save my life. My sister Betty was the first to be struck down with our family curse. She suffered a heart attack at the age of 32. She eventually recovered, but she suffered for the rest of her life from heart problems and had a valve replaced. But then her organs packed up and she died at the age of 62. Nothing was known about family history back then, when Betty had her heart attack. Our grandad had a heart attack at the age of 46, and my dad had a heart attack a couple of years before I was born and luckily he survived, but no links were made. Our curse kept attacking our family. ( martin )

AS brave Ellie Challis takes her first steps on her new legs, its a sight her parents never thought they would ever see. Ellie tragically lost all her limbs after being diagnosed with meningitis in July last year - and doctors told her parents that she may not survive the killer disease. But Ellie defied all the odds to hang on - but doctors couldn’t manage to save her arms and legs, and the brave toddler had to have them amputated eight weeks later. Specialists at Dorset Orthopaedic have now created new legs and a new arm for Ellie, and she has just taken her first steps using the new limbs. Her mother Lisa Challis, 33, a betting shop manager, said: ‘It really is wonderful to see Ellie taking her first steps. ‘When she lost her legs and arms I just broke down in tears. I couldn’t believe it had happened to my lovely bubbly little girl. But she never stops laughing and giggling - and she loves her new legs.’

AS Debbie Howarth cuddles her newborn daughter Ellie, she knows she has two very special people to thank for her baby. Debbie and her  husband David couldn’t afford IVF treatment - as amazingly at 13 stone, Debbie was labelled ‘too fat’ for IVF treatment on the NHS - and the only way they could have the treatment was to fork out nearly £3000 to go privately. It was money they didn’t have. But just as they had  given up all their dreams of being parents after years of trying, they had a stroke of most unusual luck. ( howarth )

It was a terrible decision to have to make - but the doctors were adamant. I was pregnant with twin boys and I had to let one die to save the other. ‘This can’t be happening’ I wept to my husband David, 44, a delivery driver. ‘Why can’t they both live. It’s so unfair.’ Daivd and I had been thrilled when I fell pregnant with the boys in September 2002. We had married in July 1995 after meeting each other at work, and even though we really wanted a family I knew it would be difficult because I had irregular periods. ( holland )

When Kathleen Farquhar fell pregnant there was never any doubt that she would be carrying twins. Mrs Farquhar is a twin herself - and her mum is one of twins too - so when a scan showed she was carrying twins, no-one in the family was shocked. The family’s third generation of twins arrived into the world in July - Mary weighing 8Ib6, and Daniel weighing 6Ib10. Mrs Farquhar, 33, who lives with husband Leslie, 39, a farmer, in Aboyne, near Aberdeen, said: ‘It really is amazing - that I have just given birth to the third generation of twins in our family.
