The harsh world of the Tanzanite mines.
ONE of the rarest gems in the world recently made in appearance around the neck of British author Freya North.
She was launching her new novel Pillow Talk, and after having recently discovered the existence of the gem tanzanite, she decided to write about it in her ninth book.
Tanzanite is a stunning dark blue gem - described as the most important new gemstone in 2000 years - and when Freya discovered of its existence, she made it the fascination of her central character, a jeweller, in her latest book.
But in the glitzy heady world of novels and book launches, few may realise the dangerous conditions where many risk their lives to exavate this jewel from its only hiding place in the world.
