WHEN Emmanuel Iyoha was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 27 his only thoughts were of his survival. It was only when a nurse persuaded him to have his sperm frozen before having chemotherapy treatment that he decided to take action to help him try for a family in the future. Mr Iyoha, an IT support engineer, made national headlines two years ago when his wife Zoe gave birth to the couple’s daughter Poppy - 17 years after his sperm was frozen. Now Mrs Iyoha is pregnant again - now an amazing 19 years after her husband’s sperm was first frozen.

It was his one foot I first noticed. I just love feet, and Andy’s foot was just perfect. He may have only had one foot as his other leg had been amputated above the knee and Andy was in a wheelchair. But one foot was enough. ( MICHELLE SMITH )

WHEN Maureen Sharp threw a message in a bottle into the sea in 1953 she never expected a reply. But unbelievably, it has resulted in a remarkable friendship spanning more than half a century after her message found its way onto a beach in Germany. Dagmar Wendler was just 16 years old when she found an old lemonade bottle on the beach whilst on holiday on Germany’s west coast. In it was a piece of paper written by Mrs Sharp, then 18, two years before whilst she was holidaying with her family in Mabelthorpe, Lincolnshire. Mrs Wendler wrote back and it started a bond of friendship that has culminated in the two penfriends meeting - 54 years after the bottle was first cast into the ocean.

My head was spinning as I took in what my boyfriend Paul was saying. ‘Lisa will you marry me,’ he asked. I scream ‘yes’ at Paul. I couldn’t wait to become his wife. We had been talking for a while about getting married, but his proposal had taken me by surprise. But seconds after his proposal, my head was just full of one thought. I had one very important person to ring to ask her a special question. I made the long distance call home from where we were holidaying in Eygpt. ‘Mum, will you be my bridesmaid,’ I asked her. ‘There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. Then she whispered, ‘Lisa are you sure.’ ( finch )

I slowly started to wake up and tried to turn over to get more comfy in my duvet. I’d been out the night before and I was sleeping in that morning. But as I started to wake up, I knew there was something seriously wrong. I tried to move my right leg and arm and couldn’t move it. After a few hours Terry came in. He just saw me lying there, and thought I was still asleep.I was drifiting in and out of consciousness and I could just hear him saying to the children ‘I’ll leave her in bed - she’s had a few too many so she needs to sleep it off. I wanted to scream at him ‘I’m not hungover, I’m paralysed,’ but I couldn’t say anything.

She suffers from deformities so extreme that she was called the ‘pig girl’ by her local Samoan community, but little Tina Julie Nanai has fought an unbelievable battle for survival. When she was born six months ago doctors left her to die. But her devastated parents Sefulu and Mikaele crept into the maternity ward and secretly fed her by a syringe, saving her life. Now the couple, who proudly call their brave daughter ‘Baby Miracle’ say: ‘It was so shocking when I first saw sher. When the doctors told me she would die, all I wanted to do was hold her and not let her go.’ After she was born, doctors feared she would soon die because her spinal cord was protruding through a hole in her back, her fingers and toes hadn’t formed properly, leaving her with stumps, and her face was severly misshappen. Sefulu said: “When doctors told me this would be the only time I would see her, I was devastated.’

Even when he plays in his garden it has to be in a special tunnel - apart from at night when he can play to his hearts content. His mother Sandra Webb, 50, said: ‘Alex knows that even if the sun isn’t shining, then he will still get burnt within a matter of minutes.
